Friends of Mineralogy, Colorado Chapter Time Line

1977  Several initial meetings were held  at the Denver Museum of Natural History by Jack Murphy and others to build support and file paperwork to form a FM chapter.

1978 Colorado FM Chapter organization completed with first newsletter issued and meetings held at the Denver Museum of Natural History, Denver, CO.

Sept. 1982 Colorado Minerals symposium, held at the Denver Gem and Mineral Show, Denver, CO on September 19, 1982. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter.

Sept. 1983 Classic Mineral Localities symposium, held at the Denver Gem and Mineral Show, Denver, CO on September 18, 1983. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter.

Sept. 1984 Mines, Collectors, and Their Minerals symposium, held at the Denver Gem and Mineral Show, Denver, CO on September 9, 1984. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter.

Sept. 1985 Recent Activities at Rocky Mountain Mineral Localities symposium, held at the Denver gem and Mineral Show, Denver, CO on September 15, 1985. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter.

May 1986 Colorado Pegmatites Symposium. Held at the Denver Museum of Natural History, Denver, CO on May 30 to June 2, 1986. Symposium incuded two days of field trips. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter and the Denver Museum of Natural History.

Aug. 1988 Mineralogy of Precious Metal Deposits Symposium. Held at the Colorado School of Mines, on August 12 to 15, 1988. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter and the Department of Geology of the Colorado School of Mines.

Oct. 1989 Successful Photography of Gems, Minerals, Fossils and Artifacts symposium. Held at the Denver Museum of Natural History, Denver, CO on October 28, 1989. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter and the Department of Earth Sciences, Denver Museum of Natural History.

July 1993 Publication of Antero Aquamarines, by Mark I. Jacobson (L.R. Ream Publishing). Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter, the Greater Denver area Gem and Mineral Council and the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum.

Sept. 1999 The E.E. Foord Memorial Symposium on NYF Granitic Pegmatites, held at the Denver Museum of Natural History, Denver, CO on September 11 and 14, 1999. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter, Denver Museum of Natural History, the Mineralogical Association of Canada, Rochester Mineralogical Symposium,   Harvard University Mineralogical Museum, The Pegmatite Interest Group (PIGS), and Friends of Eugene E. Foord.

Sept. 2002 Gemstone Deposits of Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Region. Held at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO, on September 6 to 10, 2002. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter, the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, the U. S. Geological Survey, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and the Greater Area Denver Gem and Mineral Council.

Sept. 2005 Agate and Cryptocrystalline Quartz symposium. Held at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO on September 9 to 13, 2005. Symposium included two days of field trips. Sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter, the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, and the U. S. Geological Survey.

August 2007. Leadville Field symposium, held at the National Mining Hall of Fame, Leadville, CO on August 24 to 26, 2007. Sponsored by the National Mining Hall of Fame and the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter.

September 2010.  Creede Mining History Symposium.  Held in Creede, Colorado, September 10 – 12,  2010. Jointly sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter, and the Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum.

September 2011. Russian Minerals symposium. Held September 10, 2011 at the Petroleum Hall, Green Center, Colorado School of Mines campus, Golden, CO.  Jointly sponsored by the Friends of Mineralogy, Colorado Chapter, the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, and the Greater Denver Area Gem and Mineral Council.

September 2014. Ouray-Silverton San Juan Mountains Mineral Symposium. Held in Ouray, Colorado, September 8 – 10,  2014. Jointly sponsored  by the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter, the Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum and the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum.

July 2016.  Second Foord Pegmatite Symposium, Berthoud Hall, Colorado School of Mines campus, Golden, CO.  Held July 15-17, 2016 with pegmatite field trips held 18-19 July, 2016. Jointly sponsored by  the Friends of Mineralogy – Colorado Chapter, the Denver Region Exploration Geologists’ Society, the Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum and the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum.
